Over the summer I read a memoir called 'Dry' by Augusten Burroughs. Seeing as we are writing our own memoirs, and that I found his book so chilling and emotional, but humorous at the same time,I wanted to comment on it.
The memior Dry is about an homosexual alcoholic overcoming his bad drinking habits. As an entrance to his story, Augusten's boss sends him to a rehab center specifically geared homosexuals. This is where Augusten incorporates his humor into the book. He is very open about his feelings, and uses profanity to get his words across. His is perplexed and in awe of the stupidity of the games and activities that the center uses to keep his mind off alcohol. For instance, there is a excerpt in which they are throwing a big stuffed animal around, chanting a childish rhyme. The funniest part of the scene, is that all the people who are doing this (and enjoying it thoroughly) are 'tough guy's' and 'manly-men'.
Now, seeing as I don't have a life experience nearly as awing as Mr. Burrough's, and since this is a paper which must be 'school appropriate' I wont be using this type of humor in my personal 'memior paper'. However, to anyone reading this, I highly suggest you take a look at any one of his works and see how he uses bold and daring humor in his books.
