I finished reading the first chapter of Stephen King's "The Gunslinger", and something that really jumped out at me was King's descriptive word choice. I read another novel written by King (it was a vampire book) and from what I remember, the word choice was not nearly as delicate. Maybe King has just gotten lazy with his writing the older he gets?
Anyway, here is a quote I found which demonstrates some of his descriptive talent
"He breasted a gently rising dune (although there was no sand here; the desert was hardpan, and even the harsh winds that blew when dark came raised only an aggravating harsh dust like scouring powder)..." (King 4)
He is giving the reader an idea of what the desert the protagonist is traversing across is like. This is, so far, the one quote that has really 'stuck out' at me. Hopefully there will be more to come.
